It has always been a big question in our industry...  "How long will the DVD last?"  Is it 5 years, 10 years, 25 years?   Honestly, no one really knows from experience... just what the manufacturer tells them.

From the beginning, we have been using the best brand in the industry, "Taiyo Yuden" discs, which are rated for 75 to 100 years, but honestly, I have a hard time believing their claim.  This is why I tell customers to always have a backup of their DVDs on another medium like a hard drive.

Now... I tell my customers, "Just get it placed on a M-Disc."  If you take care of it, the disc will last many generations to come.  It doesn't get any more permanent than this.

M-Discs use patented technology where the data is actually etched onto the disc by a laser versus regular DVDs that use a dye (which can fade in sunlight or extreme temperatures). With M-Disc DVDs, it is like carving the data into stone, so it can withstand a lot of abuse.   Expect your discs to last 100's of years!  That's right - 100's of years.  You can even dip these discs into liquid nitrogen and they still work.   M-Discs are compatible with all modern DVD players, so it is a win-win product!

As of January 20, 2012, we are the only major archival company to offer M-Disc technology.  So if you are interested in having your data remain permanent, ask us for M-Discs.  The cost is an additional $10.00 per service (a small price to pay for piece of mind).

"If you're like me, you have a whole pile of VHS tapes or miniDV tapes sitting in your closet. They're unwatchable but full of great memories! I've had the idea for a really long time of converting them to DVD's, but I just kept forgetting about it and never actually doing it. So I was thrilled to review the video transfer services offered by HD Media Services.

I love the DVD's I received from them! It's so great to actually be able to watch all my videos from college and my travels that I took with my video camera onto miniDV's. HD Media Services worked fast and sent each DVD along with all my miniDV tapes. It was like Christmas when I opened it and started watching the DVD's! The quality of the DVD's is great, and they include a plastic case for each one. They use image stabilization and color correction in their transfering, and they'll also clean and repair your tapes! And it's a great deal too, at $12.95 to transfer most formats of tapes to a DVD. Extra copies are only $4.95!"

HD Media Services is proud to be working with one of the top Australian TV networks in the conversion of several American classic series to the PAL format.

You may not know, but in other countries the TV standard is different than the US.  The frame rate is 25fps with the standard definition resolution set at 720x576, while in the US (NTSC format) our frame rate is 29.97fps with a standard resolution set at 720x480.  Making the conversion has always required expensive equipment (using brands like Teranex and Snells & Wilcox) until now...

HD Media Services has provided crystal clear conversions of 200+ episodes to the PAL format, without frame-blending or frame-interpolation (which can make images look fuzzy or unnatural).  Our process is complicated and time-consuming, but well worth the effort as the conversion looks identical to that of the original film. Thank you Seven Network for giving us the opportunity to showcase our video conversion technology!

Well, we just got new iPhones for all of our staff today and the HD video camera is quite amazing.  The quality is good and the resolution is 1280x720 (or called 720p), perfect for Blu-Ray!

Here's an easy way to copy videos from your iPhone to your Mac:

Just launch the application called "Image Capture" (already on your computer).  It should instantly see your iPhone attached and give you options to download the files directly to your Desktop.

Once on your Desktop, copy them to a USB stick (or data DVD) and mail it to HD Media Services.  We'll "sweeten" your video, by increasing the resolution to 1920x1080 (or called 1080p) and produce a Hollywood quality Blu-Ray disc for just $59.95 per hour of material.

Special note:  Make sure you record your video in the horizontal orientation (landscape) to take advantage of widescreen HDTV viewing!

We're definitely not in the hard drive business, so we welcome you to either send us your own hard drive or order one from a company like Amazon and have it shipped directly to us.  We can use practically any type of drive (USB, Firewire, SATA -- with enclosure or without).

Or if you don't want to go through the trouble, we offer Iomega hard drives for $69.95 (500GB), $99.95 (1TB) and $179.95 (2TB).  Iomega drives are great for consumer and prosumer projects, plus they come with a 3-year manufacturer warranty.

When considering a hard drive, keep the following in mind:

1.  Each hour of regular video will require 13GB of space / per hour (AVI or MOV files)
2.  Each hour of ProRes video will require anywhere from 30GB to 80GB of space / per hour
3.  MPEG-4 files do not require a hard drive as they are 2GB of space / per hour and can easily fit onto data DVDs.

From one blog to another!  Check out one of our customer's blog about our digitizing service...

If you've worked in the professional video field, then you are probably familiar with G-Technology hard drives.  We use them exclusively in our studios.  They are fast, reliable and look pretty nice too (especially if you have a Mac Pro)!

Recently, one of our customers wanted all of his Super 8 film transferred to hard drive in 1920x1080 resolution using the ProRes format (a good 60 to 80GB of space needed per hour).  Per his request, we purchased the 4TB G-Raid hard drive system from G-Technology (now owned by Hitachi).  Talk about impressive!  This drive system rocks and we've upgraded all of our 2TB drives to the new 4TB G-Raid system.  At a price of $510 each -- how could we resist?

If you need the best -- go with G-Technology!
